Musical Sundays #83
Sun 5th Sep 2010
Because Sundays are always boring, we decided, a while back, to turn them into Musical Fun Days. Each Sunday we will post a music video from an artist or genre that we think will be enjoyable to our subscribers. This weekend…
…we have been overruled by everyone who has been asking us to feature Eminem. So I guess we have nothing much to say except… here is Eminem for you as requested.

Do not forget, if you have any music videos you would like us to feature on a future Sunday then drop us a line. We are always happy to listen to requests from others, we cannot promise to feature any but we will try our best to find the videos if we think others will enjoy.

…we are featuring the Grandfathers of Electronic Music, Kraftwerk. They were formed in 1970 as an experimental band that used mainly electronic versions of instruments. They were amongst the first to use electronic percussion instead of a drummer and invented many of their instruments themselves. They have been a huge influence on many popular artists such as Gary Numan, Ultravox, OMD, Human League, Depeche Mode, Visage, Soft Cell and they are regarded as the creators of the whole electro genre. They are that influential that without them there may well never have been whole genres of music without their influence.
Despite the fact, they are fast approaching their 70th birthdays there is just something very cool about Kraftwerk. Where else could you see electro-music being performed by what looks like a bunch of chartered accountants dressed in suits?
What is amazing is that I first heard Autobahn in 1974, and yet it still sounds modern today. Kraftwerk are and will always be, years ahead of their time.

…we thought we would feature one of our favourite Zero 7 vocalists, Tina Dico. Tina is a singer and songwriter who was mainly inspired by the featured performer from last week, Tracy Chapman. Tina comes from Denmark were she has been well known for many years under her real name of Tina Dickow. Internationally she is best known for her collaboration with one of The Bears favourites groups, Zero 7.
Tina featured on their second album, When It Falls, performing the songs “Home” and “The Space Between”. She also performed live with Zero 7 including a brilliant performance at Glastonbury. Although she did not feature on Zero 7’s last album, she has stated she hopes to work with them again in the future. All The Bears hope she does!
This is Tina singing the title track from her 2005 solo album, In The Red…

…we thought we would feature a song by Tracy Chapman that a few people have requested. “Fast Car” is a song by the American singer-songwriter that was released in 1988 on her debut album Tracy Chapman. The song was nominated for several Grammies including the Grammy for “Song of the Year” and “Record of the Year”. The song won a Grammy for “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance” setting Tracy’s career in motion.
It is an old favourite of ours and we were surprised that so many of you requested it, considering it was released before many of our Bear Friends were born. However, we have since found out that the song re-entered the UK Singles Chart this year due to digital downloads of the song.
Maybe some of you lot have taste after all!

…The Bears thought it had been too long since we have featured one of our favourite groups; REM. The song we decided upon is not featured on any album of theirs as it was written specifically for the movie Man on the Moon about the life of Andy Kaufman. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture. The reason we like the song so much, apart from the fact it is a great song, is for the line, “I’m pushing an elephant up the stairs”.
We hope you like it too…

…because he was such a hit with everyone last weekend we have decided to feature a little more of Tone Loc. The title of the song refers to a fictional aphrodesiac, which is presented in the video as a steaming love potion. The lyrics tell the tale of Tone’s unsuccessful attempts to attract women. At the suggestion of a barman, he plies his intended with “that medina thing”. The song tells the story of how he gets on.
After the song became popular, a “Funky Cold Medina” drink was invented consisting of 1 oz Vodka, 1 oz Southern Comfort peach liqueur, 1 oz Blue Curacao liqueur per serving, topped with cranberry juice and ice.
Alright, let’s dig it…
Tone Loc – Funky Cold Medina
Alright, dig it
Cold coolin at a bar, and I’m lookin for some action
But like Mike Jagger said, I can’t get no satisfaction
The girls are all around, but none of them wanna get with me
My threads are fresh and I’m lookin def, yo, what’s up with L-o-c?
The girls is all jockin at the other end of the bar
Havin drinks with some no-name chump, when they know that I’m the star
So I got up and strolled over to the other side of the cantina
I asked the guy, Why you so fly? he said, Funky Cold MedinaFunky Cold Medina
This brother told me a secret on how to get more chicks
Put a little Medina in your glass, and the girls’ll come real quick
It’s better than any alcohol or aphrodisiac
A couple of sips of this love potion, and she’ll be on your lap
So I gave some to my dog when he began to beg
Then he licked his bowl and he looked at me and did the wild thing on my leg
He used to scratch and bite me, before he was much much meaner
But now all the poodles run to my house for the Funky Cold MedinaYou know what I’m sayin?
I got every dog in my neighborhood breakin down my door
I got Spuds McKenzie
Alex from Stroh’s
They won’t leave my dog alone with that Medina, palI went up to this girl, she said, Hi, my name is Sheena
I thought she’d be good to go with a little Funky Cold Medina
She said, I’d like a drink, I said, Ehm – ok, I’ll go get it
Then a couple sips she cold licked her lips, and I knew that she was with it
So I took her to my crib, and everything went well as planned
But when she got undressed, it was a big old mess, Sheena was a man
So I threw him out, I don’t fool around with no Oscar Meyer wiener
You must be sure that the girl is pure for the Funky Cold MedinaYou know, ain’t no plans with a man
This is the 80′s, and I’m down with the ladies
Ya know?Break it down
Back in the saddle, lookin for a little affection
I took a shot as a contestant on “The Love Connection”
The audience voted, and you know they picked a winner
I took my date to the Hilton for Medina and some dinner
She had a few drinks, I’m thinkin soon what I’ll be gettin
Instead she started talkin ’bout plans for our weddin
I said, Wait, slow down, love, not so fast says, I’ll be seein ya
That’s why I found you don’t play around with the Funky Cold MedinaYa know what I’m sayin
That Medina’s a monster, y’allFunky Cold Medina

…we have turned the whole thing over to Razzi this weekend so heaven help us all. Now not many of you will know this but Razzi is actually a bit of a Rapper on the quiet. However, he prefers old Rappers like Tone Loc because he is so cool and has an eye for the ladies just like Razzi. This is Razzi’s all time favourite song because, as we all know, Razzi loves to do the Wild Thing.
Tone Loc – Wild Thing
Let’s do it…
Workin’ all week 9 to 5 for my money
So when the weekend comes I go get live with the honey
Rollin’ down the street I saw this girl and she was pumpin’
I winked my eye she got into the ride went to a club was jumpin’
Introduce myself as Loc she said “You’re a liar”
I said “I got it goin’ on baby doll and I’m on fire”
Took her to the hotel she said “You’re the king”
I said “Be my queen if you know what I mean and let us do the wild thingWild thing, wild thing
Shoppin’ at the mall looking for some gear to buy
I saw this girl she cool rocked my world and I had to adjust my fly
She looked at me and smiled and said “You have plans for the night”
I said “Hopefully if things go well I’ll be with you tonight”
So we journeyed to her house one thing led to an other
I keyed the door we cold hit the floor looked up and it was her mother
I didn’t know what to say I was hanging by a string
She said “Hey you two I was once like you and I liked to do the wild thing”Wild thing, she loved to do the wild thing
Wild thing, please baby baby pleasePosse in effect hangin’ out is always hype
And when me and the crew leave the shindig I want a girl who’s just my type
Saw this luscious little frame I ain’t lyin’ fellas she was fine
The sweet young miss go gave me a kiss and I knew that she was mine
Took her to the limousine still parked outside
I tipped the chauffeur when it was over and I gave her my own ride
Couldn’t get her off my jack she was like static cling
But that’s what happens when body start slappin’ from doin’ the wild thingWild thing, she wanna do the wild thing
Please baby baby please, wild thingDoin’ a little show at the local discotheque
This fine youg chick was on my jack so I say what the heck
She want to come on stage and do her little dance
So I said chill for now but maybe later you’ll get your chance
So when the show was finished I took her around the way
And what do you know she was good to go without a word to say
We was all alone and she said “Tone let me tell you one thing
I need $50 to make you holler I get paid to do the wild thing”Say what, Yo love you must be kidding, You’re walkin’ babe
Just break out of here, Hasta la vista baby
