More Bad Weather
Wed 6th Jan 2010
Today the Bears are snowed in. We have not been able to go to work and Razzi is currently sat with a cup of coffee watching loose women – whatever next? We went for a little drive around the block earlier to test the roads to see if it was worth doing any lessons and even main roads were treacherous. The sun has ventured out but there is no heat in it, not even enough to start melting any ice hanging from the roofs.
The Bears are also a little down in the dumps because today we have taken down our little Bear Christmas Tree and everywhere seems dull and boring after all the glitter and lights of the festive season. We can understand just how people can become affected by S.A.D.
From chatting to some of the Friends of the Bears, we have learned that many schools and colleges have closed around the country and people have been hit by major disruptions to transport. As always, here in England, we do not expect much bad weather and when we get it the country grinds to a halt.
Here on the Wirral, the Bears have learnt that Wirral Council have been using over 1,000 tonnes of salt on our roads every week during the last few weeks. Today, the stocks are down to just 300 tonnes. So maybe we will get some more time off work before the weather gets any better.
Ok guys, who’s up for a snowball fight?
Latest Christmas Bear News
Sun 27th Dec 2009
Well The Bears had a great Christmas and their only negative thought is why it cannot be Christmas every day. Razzi did have a little misadventure with the Christmas tree when he knocked it over but unfortunately, no one had the video camera ready to try to get £250 out of Harry Hill. The highlight of Christmas day had to be The Royal Family. The Bears were a little upset that Jim did not say “My Arse!” which is their favourite Jim saying, but he more than made up for it with his latest catchphrase… NO CHIP PAN!?!?!?
We have also spent some time over Christmas trying to decide on five new names for our latest Friends and we think we have hit upon some winners with these. Firstly, The Bear who joined us a couple of weeks ago from Svetlana in Somerset has decided she likes the name Elodie. Thanks for the suggested goes to our friend Abby.
The Brother and Sister who joined us from Bedfordshire have decided on the names of Elgin and Evelyn. Thanks to Abby again and Beckieee for picking those names. The Bear who arrived in his very own Christmas jumper has decided he likes the name has been searching on the Internet for a name of his own. He has decided he quite likes the name of Easton. The final Bear in need of naming who joined us from Yorkshire has decided he likes Egor, suggested by Carina.
We hope everyone had a great Christmas and you all got the pressies you wanted.
Merry Christmas
Fri 25th Dec 2009
All The Bears and myself would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and we hope you get everything you have asked Father Christmas for. Everyone here at The Birkenhead Bear Sanctuary never feels like it is Christmas until we have watched The Snowman. Every year we sit in front of the telly for half an hour and watch the animated version of the Raymond Briggs book. So far this year we have not seen it so we thought we would bring it to you. This is our favourite scene where the boy flies with his Snowman while Aled Jones sings the theme song…
Have a wonderful day and always remember… let’s be careful out there!
The Bears Put Their Tree Up
Sat 19th Dec 2009
Today is the day The Bears decided to put their Christmas tree up. The job was designated to Eon, Elonex and Elgar to put the tree up, decorate it and make sure the lights were all untangled and working. No mean feat for a human with fingers and thumbs but it is even harder for a Bear with claws and pads. However, they did a great job and had the tree up in no time. Even the lights decided to play the game and came on first time!
Next, it was down to Edward to decorate the blog. He has been making secret plans with Milenko over at digitalnature so we were expecting something brilliant and we were not let down. Milenko had come up with a Christmas MOD for the blog – an extension of the existing theme but with a Christmas feel. Edward decided to take it a step further and has added snow. We love the festive feel to the blog it really has got The Bears into the Christmas spirit.
We hope you all like the Festive version of the Blog and if you have any suggestions, complaints or notice any bugs then please let Edward know and I am sure he can sort them out.
We hope your having a great weekend and do not forget people… let’s be careful out there!

Five Bears; all in need of a name!!
The last couple of days have seen the Birkenhead Bear Sanctuary looking more like a madhouse than ever before. We are used to upheaval and new arrivals but nothing like the volume of arrivals these last few days. We have had no more than FOUR BEARS arrive yesterday and today. All of them happy to be in a new home in time for Christmas. We are also still in need of a name for The Bear who arrived last Friday, leaving us with names to find for FIVE BEARS over the next few days.
The Bear who arrived last Friday is a little girl who arrived from Mandeville in Yeovil, Somerset. She used to live with Svetlana. Unfortunately, we do not know anything about her as her eBay description simply described as an “old fully jointed teddy bear.” However, she does have a cute little face and a squinty kind of smile to match her pleasing disposition. She has waited long enough for a name so we need one urgently!
The next to arrive was a Bear from Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. The Bear is male and again very little is known about him as he was simply listed on eBay with only a very rough description.
The very same day a pair of Bears from Biggleswade, Bedfordshire arrived. They are brother and sister, purchased from a Renault Dealership. They are a little shy and withdrawn because they have never played with children. Despite this, they are both very polite Bears who seem very keen to make new friends with our Bears.
The last Bear to arrive was from Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire. He has arrived with his very own Christmas jumper knitted for him by his former owner. He has spent a very boring life up until now, sitting on a shelf all by himself. He does seem to be enjoying meeting the other Bears and does have a cheery little disposition.
All these Bears are now waiting to be named – we need your suggestions, please!
Tomorrow should be a rather exciting day at the Birkenhead Bear Sanctuary as it is time for the Bears to put up their special little Christmas tree. They have their own tree, with fairy lights and decorations and tomorrow is the big day for putting it up. Edward will also be decorating the blog so make sure you check back tomorrow to see a Christmas theme here on the Bear Blog.
The Christmas excitement is really building around the Bear Sanctuary now. We all cannot wait for the big day; but remember… let’s be careful out there!
