Bear History #1: The Story Of Emerson Bear
Thu 20th Aug 2009
Today, we thought we would start off a new series of stories about the History of our Renault Bears. Where they came from, where they lived prior to joining us, anything they remember of their time before coming to The Bear Sanctuary and anything we have learnt since they arrived here. To get the series off here is a look at the history of Emerson Bear…

Emerson Bear along with his Card and Book also given away with him.
Emerson Bear is a very special Bear, unlike all the others he was born in the wild while all the other Bears were born in captivity in England. Emerson was born in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur which is part of the French Alps. He was born into a large family of Bears who lived and foraged for food in the mountain ranges of the Alps. Sometime during 1998 he was captured from the Alps by the Renault Car Company and tamed at their special Bear Taming Head Quarters in Mont Blanc.
After months of barbaric treatment at the hands of the Taming Staff he was shipped over to England in conditions that were far from ideal. The treatment handed out to Renault Bears caught in this fashion has resulted in a vast and as yet unknown loss of life for The Bears. Many Bears were killed during their Taming, Storage, Shipment and initial Landing in England. The number of Bears who lost their lives in the actual capturing process remains a mystery but may equal or exceed the number of Bears actually enslaved.
Most Bear Historians now agree that at least 10 to 20% of Bears captured, died prior to reaching England.
Just what happened to other Bears captured at the same time as Emerson, including members of his own family, is unknown. Emerson was given away free with a Renault Car that was purchased in Hampshire in late 1999. Emerson says the Dealership he came from had many Bears held in captivity and many of them where given away free while others were sold. Emerson was lucky he moved into a loving home with his former owner Alan, but we are not so sure what happened to thousands of others who have since vanished without trace.

Emerson: a very special Bear indeed!
Today we received another new Bear this time from Alan in Waterlooville in Hampshire, but this Bear is a little special. Renault Bears do not have a very good memory and they tend to forget most of what has happened to them before they come to join us here at the Bear Sanctuary. This is not the case with Emerson; he can remember everything.
Emerson was captured from the wilds of the French Alps in 1998 and was given away free with a Renault Car that was purchased in Hampshire. Emerson says the Dealership he came from had many Bears held in captivity and many of them where given away free while others were sold for £9.99 along with a book entitled; “RB’s Year Round Trip”. The book was sold for £1.99 of which £1 per book was donated to SPARKS – the Sport Aiding Medical Research for Kids charity. Emerson even has his original gift card from Renault in case Alan had wanted to give him away as a Christmas present!
Emerson was lucky he moved into a loving home with Alan but we are not so sure what happened to hundreds of others who have since vanished without trace.
Welcome to your new home, Emerson.
