The Giant Panda
Tue 15th Dec 2009
Everybody knows that the Giant Panda is an endangered species. The main reason for this is not because man hunts them or global warming or any other man-made danger – it is because they are not very prolific breeders and because they are born so small and defenceless not many make it through to adulthood. Therefore, it was great news last year when four cubs were born in the Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Centre in the Sichuan province of China.
However, being born is just the beginning of the battle for the tiny cubs…

Giant Panda cubs are not born quite so giant!

Giant Panda Yun Zi
This is giant panda cub Yun Zi. He was born at the San Diego Zoo on 5th August 2009. His name is “Son of Cloud” in Chinese. When born he weighed in at just 4 ounces and he is the fifth cub born to his mother Bai Yun. The name was selected from a list of 6,300 names submitted by his fans.
He doesn’t like being weighed and this week he squirmed in the arms of a handler during his weekly checkup. He weighed in at 14.5 pounds. According to the zoo, keepers needed to use both hands to lift him up and keep him from walking off the exam table at the San Diego Zoos.
